Games Dept. Student Information Students are greatly encouraged to participate in games. Students participating in games for 2005/2006 are requested to note the following:
Students may only represent the school in two disciplines, except in exceptional circumstances and with the express approval of the sports co-ordinator. One discipline must be either hurling/camogie or Gaelic football. You will be given an opportunity to sign up for two disciplines during the first week of term. Players who leave school during the year may not continue to represent the school on teams. Players will be asked to pay a minimum of €2.00 for bus per away game. Cost will vary depending on distance (maximum €4.00). Locker keys, watches or other valuables must be handed into games prefect when taking out balls at lunch time. Students must show respect for games teachers at all times. In the interests of safety students must wear a helmet and visor when training and representing the school in hurling and camogie. It is the responsibility of each student who represents the school to return his/her jersey/singlet to the team manager immediately after a game.
The sports department enter teams in various sports without specialising in any particular discipline. In this way, students have the opportunity to represent their school in different games during their years at Heywood. An average of twenty teams are entered each year, catering for all age groups. 17 teachers were involved last year. Training takes place after school from 3.45pm to 5.00pm. Teachers who took teams in the last two years have drawn up the following rules in consultation with the Principal. When a student has been persistently misbehaving, only the Principal/Deputy Principal or Year Head should deprive the student of participation in extra curricular activities as a means of discipline. No more than two games to be organised for any particular day. Students may only represent the school in two disciplines during the school year. Jerseys must be counted when taken and returned after use. Players who leave school during the year may not continue to represent the school on teams. Twenty six people only on the school bus including teacher and driver. First game written up on the staffroom calendar takes precedence. Coaches are advised to take the mobile phone and first aid kit to all games. Phone can be obtained from the secretary's office, and first aid kits are kept in the staffroom.
