The school is situated 1.2 Km from Ballinakill, 5km from Abbeyleix on the South Laois/Kilkenny border. The Owenbeg river flows along the south east boundaries of Ballinakill and the town itself is situated Northwest of the Castlecomer Plateau.

Heywood Community School is 20 km from Portlaoise southbound along the N77 (exit M7 at Junction 17). In Abbeyleix you turn left, you then veer right at the junction of the R430 and R432 towards the town of Ballinakill and it is sign posted from there on.
